Michigan's Habitant Heritage:
Journal of the French-Canadian Heritage Society
of Michigan

Michigan's Habitant Heritage has been published since the founding of the Society in 1980. The officers and members of the French-Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan are justifiably proud of the quality journal we publish under the auspices of our editor, Gail F. Moreau-DesHarnais, and the editorial team she has assembled to help her. The journal is by far the best reason for joining our Society.

Selected Articles

The following four articles have been selected to present you with an idea of the quality of articles published in the Society's journal over the years.

bullet

Moreau, Gail F. Moreau-DesHarnais. "Exiles from Québec Found in the Parish of St-Jacques de Dieppe During the Kirke Occupation (1629-1632)." Michigan's Habitant Heritage 24, no. 2 (April 2003): 77-78.

bullet

Colby, Susan Mélanie. "Captives of the French and Indian Wars Part 1: Captured from New England." Michigan's Habitant Heritage 23, no. 2 (April 2002): 79-88. "Captives of the French and Indian Wars, Part 2: Captured from New France." Michigan's Habitant Heritage 24, no. 3 (July 2003): 133-140.

bullet

Goodwin, Delphine Ford, and Gail Moreau-DesHarnais. "Searching for Antoine Martin dit Soud." Michigan's Habitant Heritage 26, no. 2 (April 2005): 83-88. And, Gail Moreau-DesHarnais "Part 2: Jacques Azeman/Azema/Agement/Son dit Martin/St. Martin." Michigan's Habitant Heritage 26, no. 4 (October 2005): 168-169.

bullet

Sommerville, Suzanne Boivin. "The Marriage Contract in New France According to La Coutume de Paris / The Custom of Paris." Michigan's Habitant Heritage 26, no. 3 (July 2005): 135-137.

bullet By popular demand, we are also placing a copy of the series James Lalone wrote from 1985 to 1988 on the Tremblay family here for your use. Please be aware that Mr. Lalone is constantly working to improve his Tremblay database and that this series is no longer up-to-date. In particular, it does not include the reserch René Jetté did to untangle the four contemporary Louis Tremblay and Ursule Simard couples. Nevertheless, it is a valuable work and a good example of the kind of articles published in Michigan's Habitant Heritage over the years.

Best Article of 2007

Every year the Society's Board of Directors will select the article they consider the best to have appeared in our journal and feature it here for the general public to appreciate the quality of the work submitted to our journal.

The 2007 voted best article is Gail Moreau-DesHarnais and Diane Wolford Sheppard's "Hillary Rodham Clinton’s French-Canadian Ancestry: Detroit and Michigan Connection," Michigan's Habitant Heritage 28, no. 4 (October 2007): 197-202 and "Hillary Rodham Clinton: Ancestry of Delia Martin: Conclusion."
